my family watched the early release screening of Crazy Rich Asians tonight and my 40+ year old first gen Chinese American dad literally lasted 10 minutes before he started crying. After the movie he was talking about how he didn’t think the movie would affect him, now that he’s a grown up with a family, but he hadn’t realized how formative growing up without representation was. Everyone who looked like him as a sidekick, or had to know some martial art to train the white lead. Seeing someone who looked like him being seen as unquestionably handsome, desirable, as a rom-com lead made him realize that for his whole life, he felt invisible.

Representation is so important. It’s so insidious what media does to us— if you’re not represented, or if you’re represented poorly, that seeps into you and affects your self-image without you realizing.

Even “imperfect” representation, things people think “perpetuate Asian stereotypes” or are inaccurate, can make people feel SEEN. Maybe some things weren’t perfect, but I saw so much honesty in it, and I saw so much of my family in it.

Please watch Crazy Rich Asians. Please. It’s so important.

chris control your goddamn face you have just gone through an extremely painful super-serum transformation you did not just have the diddly doo orgasm

…actually, at this point, Steve’s just now experiencing the sudden absence of both recent extreme pain and long-term low level pain.  He’s probably so high on endorphins that the expression is completely accurate.

Also, he was asthmatic. This is the first time in twenty years that his lungs work. Ever had an oxygen high?

Might not be an O-face folks, but homeboys high as a kite.

It’s disgusting to make fun of someone who battles addiction regardless of who they are, but Demi Lovato has done so much to help lessen the stigma of mental illness just by being so publicly upfront about living with her multiple disorders, I can’t believe someone would ridicule her for this recent overdose. This is a woman who has lived in the spotlight since she was a CHILD. Since she was 16 years old she has had to navigate her addiction, bipolar disorder, self harm, and bulimia within a hostile, enabling industry and in spite of constant public scrutiny. More than any great talent she possesses, Demi Lovato is a fucking hero for being a woman who has kept on living and loving and fighting thru it all. Shame on you if you think this is fodder for jokes and memes. Fucking misogynists

“If a person can’t get out of bed, something is making them exhausted. If a student isn’t writing papers, there’s some aspect of the assignment that they can’t do without help. If an employee misses deadlines constantly, something is making organization and deadline-meeting difficult. Even if a person is actively choosing to self-sabotage, there’s a reason for it — some fear they’re working through, some need not being met, a lack of self-esteem being expressed. People do not choose to fail or disappoint. No one wants to feel incapable, apathetic, or ineffective. If you look at a person’s action (or inaction) and see only laziness, you are missing key details. There is always an explanation. There are always barriers. Just because you can’t see them, or don’t view them as legitimate, doesn’t mean they’re not there. Look harder. Maybe you weren’t always able to look at human behavior this way. That’s okay. Now you are. Give it a try.”

“Laziness Does Not Exist” by E Price on Medium

(And a footnote I didn’t see explicitly covered in the article: laziness still doesn’t exist when it is you yourself making no progress and not knowing why. You deserve that respect and consideration, too, even from yourself.)

Just so you all know..

This blog is 100% anti PETA.

We love our vegetarian and vegan friends and family (and I have a lot of them!!). We don’t support an organization that claimes to love animals and does nothing but hurt them and the people who love them.

Hugs and support to my extended dog show family at Crufts.

Not saying that youre wrong because peta is on some sketchy shit but what did they do to hurt animals?? Again not saying that ur wrong I just don’t know

PETA’s Shelter Euthanized 72% Of Its Animals Last Year.

PETA kills “rescued” lobsters by putting them in fresh water

PETA Joins Forces with Group Working to Kill All “Pit Bulls” Nationwide

PETA thinks that keeping pets is cruelty and slavery

PETA’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad History of Killing Animals

More why PETA is horrible

We also do NOT support vegans that force their carnivorous pets to live on a vegan diet. Hypocrisy is somthing I HATE and if you really cared that much about animals you would do the research needed to feed your pets a species appropriate diet.

like the problem with the tumblr community is that no one is allowed to safely fuck up

if i was my uneducated ignorant little 14 year old self y’all would have ripped me a new one and probably scarred me for life

and that’s so scary tbh, that a community of adults would and DO witch hunt and harass minors over things they’re being children about

…Yeah

Maybe it’s just me, but I actually like when my heroes make mistakes? It makes me feel less like a failure in my own life if the people I look up to and idolize also screw up. The entire point is to watch them keep fighting and get back up when they fall down. That inspires me a heck of a lot more than watching them win over and over again and never mess up.

My emotions are valid*

*valid does not mean healthy, or good, or to be privileged above common sense and kindness

A distinction for anyone who is young and hasn’t figured this out yet:

You are allowed to have whatever emotions you want. No one can control your emotions. Emotions are healthy responses to things.

You are not allowed to have behaviors that are harmful just because you have certain emotions. Your behaviors are what you can control, and they are far easier to control than your emotions.

You can be jealous about someone or their talents until you turn green, but it is harmful to yourself and to that person if you try to sabotage them because of it. You can be so angry you can literally feel your temperature rise, but this does not give you permission to rage at others.

Your emotions are valid. They are always valid. You are a person of value. However, you behaviors are not always justified just because of those emotions. You may not be able to control you emotions, but you can certainly control your behaviors.

“You may not be able to control your emotions, but you can certainly control your behaviors.”
